2004 Rhys Syrah Alesia Chileno Valley

Something is off here. Lots of funk and forrest on the nose, but there's a sticky syrup behind that conflicts. Same with the palate. Nice fruit, but on the back I'm getting smacked by a 2X4 of wood and tannins. Many nice elements in this wine, but the entire package is not working for me. Also lacking the crushed pepper I usually love with Syrah. With blackened swordfish. I paid $37 direct from Alesia. Disappointing at this price.

Grade: C-

Actually, it would also be great if you included varietal too, because sometimes when I don't know the wine, I am really not sure. That and the price for every wine you review would really help me better understand your comments!
