Roaring 20s dinner at Cru

This dinner was setup by Acker's Wine Workshop to bring us back to the glowing time of the 20s. Amazing food, and the most interesting wine experience. It isn't every day I drink wine this old. I found the night stimulating and a lot of fun, and I left glad to be alive. 1928s are especially great, although all wines were in surprisingly good shape.

1920 Cantemerle. Very light. Tar and ash nose. Really pretty. Lots of acids. Still fresh. Clearly old. But could be only 20 or 30. Evolves very quickly. Grade: A.

1920 Baret. This one has some volatile acidity (VA). Maderized nose. Someone says marmite. Very funky. Darker than the cantermerle. Still some nice flavors. Grade: B-

1921 Ducru. Someone says aluminum and green olive nose. Tart and somewhat thin. Gamy flavors. Nice but finish dies quickly. I'll bet it was great 50 years ago but fun to drink now! Lasts in the glass. Grade: A-

1924 Beycheville. Slighty corked. Best richest palate so far. Still some fruit. Turns dusty as it sits. Perfect bottle/ label- I have it in my cellar. Grade: B+

1924 La Sarget. Rich. Wine of the night, so far. Rich with lush ripe fruit and an excellent long finish. Great balance. Second wine of gerard larose! Grade: A

1926 La Mission Haut Brion. At first maderized. Then more strange mushroomy. Someone
says like very old worchester sauce. I like this less than most in the room. More strange than good. Grade: B.

1928 Brane Cantenac. Maderized nose. Strange. Not much fruit but very nice finish. Thin and very old. But I am enjoying it. Grade: B-

1928 Cos d'Estournel. My new favorite of the night. Awesome full of life. Stunning vibrent fruit. Rich and full. Someone says everying you'd want from bordeaux. Cedar and spice. Grade: A

1928 montrose. Also excellent and rich. Menthol and clove nose. Still spicy fruit. Still tannic! Olive notes. Grade: A-

1928 clos fourtet. Light. Maderized nose. Old book bordeaux. Grade: B

1928 Cheval Blanc. Burnt rubber nose that blows into roasted coffee. Inherent breeding and so pretty. Bill mcmahon says like a warm embrace. Most pick it as wine of the night, and I don't argue. Sininging right now. Grade: A+

1928 l'evangile. Looks like an 05 bordeaux!! Very dark. Smells like liquid chocolate- someone says melted tootsie rolls. Rich, hard palate of cinnamon brown sugar. I should drink like this once a week! Grade: A-

1929 La Lagune. Shy wine. Very pretty. Feminie. Charcoal. Fresh mint. Grade: A-

1929 Margaux. Timeless. Smells like raisin and pretty white spring flowers.
Perfect balance and poise! Not as long as the Cos or Cheval. Delicious. Grade: A.
