2006 Rhys Pinot Noir Alpine Vineyard

Amazing aromas of an evergreen forest, menthol, and wild raspberry. On the palate, it hides in its youth, yet has a complex, wild side. There's structure in the funky tannic spicy cherry and cranberry. Delicate, intriguing mouth feel. Impeccably balanced, long finish. I'd like to drink this wine blind in a line-up of grand cru Burgundy. It is a baby and will surely improve with a few more years of bottle age. Just great, and unexpected from California, where the usual pinot is thick, hot and ripe. I paid $49 from the Rhys mailing list. Current retail is $120. Grade: A.

Drank this again tonight, Jill says straited flavors that haven't blended. Blackberry, current and cherry. Acidic. Pine nose. Melty tar. I find it more acidic than last time, and lower the score a little. Jill: B+. Michael: A-
