1977 Ridge Monte Bello Cabernet

Great showing for this mature classy wine. Some bricking but still a warm ruby. Vegital menthol aromas. Green pepper and lots of vegies on the palate, including broccoli, asperagus and other very interesting secondary flavors. Could be a top bordeaux. Still has a nice length. Enjoyable. Thanks Mike! Great American Pinots sponsored by the Wine Infusion

Excellent event and value! Here’s the site. All are expensive (most over $100): 2002 Hanzell Pinot. Aggressive cherry, and quite masculine. Nice animal. Smooth and long. Well made. A-. 2005 Rochioli Little Hill. Dirty cherry nose. Clear and percise long and full this is great. Pure lovely clean fruit with charactor. A. Wine of the [...]

2003 Condado de Haza Ribera del Duero

We like it! This is a good, hearty tempranillo. There’s dense dark fruits (plums, blackberries) with some earth and road tar, framed by a kick of spice. Drank with a steak, which works well. It would also work with spicy food. It come across slightly one dimensional, but the quality is great in this price [...]

Amazing Burgundy Dinner at 11 Madison

All wines are very expensive (over $100). This was one of my favorite wine dinners. The first wine is from the list. We brought the rest. 2004 Roulot Mersault Luchets. It had lovely green apple, white grapefruit and great minerality. David pointed out airborne chalk. This is soft and compelling. I clearly need more Roulot [...]

2005 Comte Georges de Vogue Chambolle-Musigny, bottle # 00110

This is an outstanding red burgundy that delivers the goods. It is a lovely ruby red, with a nose of some damp earth, mushroom funk, and musty dark summer fruit. It is fine as silk, with wild blackberries, wild flowers, and incredible finesse and charm. Hard to imagine that it is a villages level wine. [...]

2003 Wolffer Cabernet Franc

This was a gift from a friend. It is similar to a Loire cab frank with a saline, vegetal streak. It is a low alcohol (12.8% quoted on the bottle), acidic wine with a lot of character, but not enough fruit to support the acids. There’s not enough finish to be compelling. It comes off [...]

2002 Blankiet Estate Merlot Paradise Hills Vineyard

Big merlot beast. It drinks more like a shiraz, with concentrated, viscus spicy dark fruits, massive tannins, and a very long finish. It does have some Bordeaux-like features of cigar box on the nose, and a leathery, albeit very smooth mouth feel. It is brimming with personality and charm. There’s no subtlety, but everything is [...]

2005 Novy Syrah Parsons’ Vinyard

Nicely done. Dark crushed purple. Smoky stewed meet and ripe plums make up the compelling nose. Jucy and smooth, this wine has a real stature and poise. Also a good hint of crushed black pepper. There’s a long finish with some smooth tannins. Retail is $30, but I do not see it for sale, anywhere. [...]

2005 Donnhoff Oberhauser Brucke Riesling Spatlase

This will almost certainly put me on a German Riesling kick. We drank this delicious wine with amazingly flavorful Thai food at Lotus of Siam in Las Vegas. Certainly the best Thai we’ve tried in the US. The wine is light pale golden. The nose has a slight must in a grove of fresh citrus. [...]

2003 Summers Cabernet Sauvignon Andrianna’s Cuvee

Nice gift from a friend more than a year ago, finally consumed. Outstanding, velvet dark ruby. The nose is not giving much, but acts more more like a syrah with ripe, spicy fruit. Then jammy dark fruits, like plums, figs, with some smooth tannins, and a nice finish. While this doesn’t perform anything like a [...]
