2007 Willi Schaefer Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Spatlese

Super pale yellow.   Incredible aromas of peaches and minerals.  Little bit of spritz blows off in about 30 minutes.  Becomes lip-smacking good.  Fresh flinty, petrol and a very long finish.  This will age a long, long time.   Great harmony here.   Great wine, especially at this price!  Retail $29, Grade: A.

2005 Nicolas Potel Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Chenes

My wine friends will tell me I am crazy for opening yet another 2005 red burgundy.  These are supposed to age a long time they argue.  Although correct, they are absolutely delicious now.  Full of lovely deep fruits and strength. This is a beauty.  Dark ruby.   Incredibly compelling aromas of cinnamon, lavender, violets, and some [...]

2007 Cayuse God Only Knows

Light  color for a Rhone style wine.  Transparent ruby.  Yummy, earthy aromas of flowers, cherry, and a fresh herb garden. Medium body but with depth and a real sense of place.  This has deep pitched, stewed fruit rolled in dirt (but in a good way- trust me), and a long, harmonious finish.  This is not [...]

2005 Kistler Pinot Noir Cuvee Catherine

Dark, especially for a pinot.    Stunning aromas.   Strawberry rhubarb pie, menthol and an evergreen forest.    Full, lush, and very sweet, with extreme depth.    This is a beauty, but in a ripe, Californian style.    High alcohol, and a very very long finish.    This is about $150 at retail.  Luckily I am on the mailing list and [...]

2007 Chateau de Paraza Cuvee Special Minervois

Light with a somewhat hallow middle core.   Pretty raspberries, but mostly undistinguished with a medium finish.    This is in the house wine category.   Then I check what I paid: $8!    Nice wine at this price.    Very decent at under $10.  From the Languedoc in France. Grade: A-.

2006 Romanee Conti Batard Montrachet.

From Oct 28th 2010.  Dark. Incredible fireworks of aromas.  Full delicate yet strong mouth feel.  Pam says like peacock tail coue du pon.   Jill says vanilla candied lemon rind sweet vanilla nose. Finish is literally forever.  3 hours later I still get glimpses.  90 year old vines and just for friends. 1 barrel.   [...]

2004 Maury la Preceptorie de Centerach Cuvee Aurielie Pereira de Abreu

I drank this on Oct 26, 2010.  Desert wine from the Languedoc-Roussillon region in France.   Our host in Burgundy served this after a wonderful dinner.  Not available at retail, but he said it was under 20 EUR.  Very dark purple.  Macerated plum aromas. Very compelling.  Ripe and lots of alcohol on the back.   Long [...]
